Arriving in a new city: the good, the bad, and the beautiful

So yesterday February 8th I arrived in Brisbane, Australia. It was amazing until I had to find my airbnb. I got lost in the Central Business District and just broke down and started crying. It was a mix of anxiety and sleep deprivation which made the situation worse. It is very hard to get around a new city without a map or gps! After an emotional breakdown and a taxi ride later I arrived at my airbnb.

I felt disgusting so I took a quick shower and tried to lie down for a nap, which didn’t work. I then got ready and went out to explore and get things done. I got very, very lost and did a lot of unnecessary walking. But, I made it to QUT eventually.

After a while I walked away with my QUT ID card, new SIM card, and a go card (the city transportation card). I was out and walking around until about 5pm and took the free ferry the City Hopper over to Kangaroo Point (where I’m staying).

I planned on going back out after a shower and a quick nap. It turns out that nap lasted until midnight so I went back to sleep until about six am. Basically I slept for 12 hours.

Now I’m on my second day and I went exploring some more, but thankfully without a lot of the unnecessary walking! Tonight I’m meeting up with another USC student who just arrived.

Oh, I also got an anxiety buddy. It’s a stuffed koala who I’ve named Theo. He’s very cute and he’s holding a baby koala named Vincent! They are to help me if I’m having an attack to by helping me feel grounded. I got them because I had about 3 or 4 anxiety attacks when I arrived so I felt it was necessary. But, today my anxiety feels under control thankfully!

Try and guess where their names came from, comment below!

Hint: Brothers

Learned so much about Van Gogh on a visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. Interesting detail, according to the story of his life, it seems he may have been Bi polar, before bi polar was a thing. Also, he started out as a preacher and a not very good artist. His brother was his biggest supporter throughout.

Happy you have another Gamecock there now!! Wow you are stronger than you thought!! You made it there! Just take deep breaths and don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for what you are accomplishing!! You may already do this, but since I travel alone a good bit, I look at what is on corners of street I need to turn on, what fronts of buildings look like, etc on google street view. If you have that there try and see if that helps. Can’t wait for your next post!! Love u!!
